West Bengal government is planning to develop two ports – Tajpur and Kulpi port. These projects entail an investment of ₹ 60,000 million. Kulpi port is likely to be developed in partnership with DP World. The state government has signed an MoU with the shipping ministry to develop the project on partnership basis, where Union Government will have 74% stake in the port.
In March 2019, the state government has approved the construction of the project. Both Kulpi and Tajpur projects are located 50 kms apart across Hooghly river. The new ports will give exporters and importers alternate gateways to ship cargo.
